Celebrating UC Berkeley’s Role in Protecting and Promoting Privacy
Data Privacy Day is Thursday, Jan. 28
Dear Campus Community,
Join us in celebrating Data Privacy Day with a lively panel discussion:
Privacy and Student Analytics: Student Success or Student Surveillance?
Thursday, Jan. 28, 4:00-5:00 p.m., 210 South Hall
As a place where the brightest minds from across the globe come together to explore, ask questions, and improve the world, UC Berkeley values privacy as a foundation for human dignity, radical creativity, and an ethical and respectful environment.
How do we balance these privacy values against the push to expand data collection and analytics to support student achievement?
The UC Statement of Privacy Values and Privacy Principles affirms that:
-
We respect an individual’s ability to conduct activities without concern of or actual observation (autonomy privacy) because academic and intellectual freedoms are most vibrant where individuals have adequate space for experimentation and discourse without intimidation.
-
We also commit to the appropriate protection, use, and release of information about individuals (information privacy).
Balancing both types of privacy with our other values and obligations (transparency, accountability, laws, etc.) is among the most challenging issues of our time.

We invite you to act for privacy today and everyday. Here are some ways you can learn more and get involved:
Tips to Protect Privacy
- Remain vigilant against phishing attacks (security.berkeley.edu/phishing).
- For department managers: Set up and use Special Purpose Accounts for University communication and work, and regularly remind staff to use them.
- For employees: Separate personal documents from the business of the University (recognizing the University’s Public Records obligations and other legal requirements for disclosure) and be familiar with best practices for information management when leaving the University.
- Learn about UC Berkeley’s requirements for accessing electronic communications
- Check out UCB’s transparency reports, which have received national press.
