Travers Ethics Program Co-Sponsors Recall Debate Events
Publicly Telivised Debate with Panel Discussion to Follow
The UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS) will be hosting a public
viewing of “Race to the Recall,” the first televised debate on California’s
gubernatorial recall will be airing Wednesday, September 3, 2003 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
on KTVU Channel 2.
The entire event will run from 3:45 pm –7:00 p.m. In the IGS Library, 109 Moses Hall.
The debate itself will begin with a half-hour devoted to the recall question. Governor
Davis has been invited to participate. The remaining 90 minutes will feature the
invited top six gubernatorial candidates. In alphabetical order they are:
- Cruz M. Bustamante, Lieutenant Governor (D)
- Peter Miguel Camejo, Financial Investment Advisor (Green)
- Arianna Huffington, Author/Columnist/Mother (I)
- Tom McClintock, State Senator (R)
- Arnold Schwarzenegger, Actor Businessman (R)
- Peter V. Ueberroth, Businessman/Olympic Consultant (R)
Following the debate, a panel of issue experts will discuss issues raised in the debate and answer questions from the audience. This discussion will run from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Our panel so far (as of 8/21) includes:
- Severin Borenstein, E.T. Grether Proefesor in Public Policy and Business
Adminsitration, Haas Economic Analysis and Policy Group and Director of the University
of California Energy Institute
- Helen Halpin, Professor of Health Policy and Director of the Center for Health
and Public Policy Studies, UC Berkeley School of Public Health
- David Pearson, Professor and Dean of the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Education
A second televised debate will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, time to be determined. This event will also take place in 109 Moses Hall.

Panel Presentation with California Secretary of State Kevin Shelly
A panel presentation with the California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley to discuss election administration for the recall special statewide election. This event takes place on September 4, 2003, 4:30-5:30 pm. Political Science Professor Henry Brady will participate in this event. To be held in 109 Moses Hall.
A Universitywide recall conference to be held on Saturday, October 18, 2003, 9 am to 4 pm, Lipman Room, 8th Floor of Barrows Hall.
