![]() Citizenship, Education, and Public Accountability Conference at UC Berkeley This is a one-day conference that will explore the idea of responsible citizenship and the role of citizens in shaping public policy. Participants will discuss such topics as whether the nation is striking the right balance between civil liberties and national security, how an atmosphere of fear can alter citizen inclination to hold government officials accountable and how we can educate for citizenship in a democracy. The event is free and open to the public.
Socially Responsible Business Leadership Initiative Unveiled at Haas Business School Tom Campbell, new dean at the Haas School of Business, has announced a new Socially Responsible Business Leadership Initiative and the program's new executive director. The initiative includes student visits to prisons to talk with white-collar criminals, classes in corporate ethics and social responsibility, and an expanded lecture series on corporate ethics. The program will be supported with grants from actor/philanthropist Paul Newman and from Haas School alumnus Michael Homer.

Travers Ethics Program Co-Sponsors Recall Debate Events First, the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS) will be hosting a public viewing of "Race to the Recall," the first televised debate on California’s gubernatorial recall will be airing Wednesday, September 3, 2003 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on KTVU Channel 2. Following the debate, a panel of issue experts will discuss issues raised in the debate and answer questions from the audience. This discussion will run from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Next, a panel presentation with the California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley to discuss election administration for the recall special statewide election. This event takes place on September 4, 2003, 4:30-5:30 pm. Political Science Professor Henry Brady will participate in this event. To be held in 109 Moses Hall. Also, a second televised debate will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, time to be determined. This event will also take place in 109 Moses Hall. Finally, a University wide recall conference will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2003, 9 am to 4 pm, Lipman Room, 8th Floor of Barrows Hall.
Independent Sector Announces Accountability Initiative Independent Sector, a national membership organization that works to strengthen the philanthropic sector, has announced a new accountability initiative to help the boards and staff of nonprofit organizations develop clear standards and procedures for ethical behavior. "Public trust is the sine qua non of the nonprofit sector," said Independent Sector president and CEO Sara E. Meléndez. To that end, the organization has issued a call for all nonprofits to adopt and follow a code of ethics and created an online compendium of the standards of more than sixty nonprofits
